The new normal: mourning a chicken

Things have been rather quiet around our house lately.

It didn’t help that we went on vacation for over a week.

When we returned two Sundays ago, I went to check on my chickens and allow them some foraging time before sunset. While we were gone, I had a friend come by every two days and give them and the rabbits new water and food as usual.

Exhausted from many miles, I didn’t notice anything wrong at first. I let the girls out and got a bucket to start collecting eggs. Then I leaned down to look under the ramp and I saw her.

I said, “Chicken, What are you doing?”

Then I saw the maggots. I left my bucket and my eggs and told Daniel we had our first deceased chicken.
